But really, we're doing the kid a favor.
Ben played his first rounds of Dungeons & Dragons over the weekend. I know, I know... "What kind of person sets up their child for that kind of nerdliness and mockery?" Well, here are the GOOD points:
- First of all, he's a great storyteller with a huge imagination, so he ate the stuff right up and had a ball. Great exercise for the storytelling muscles.
- It's a good chance for him to get some one-on-one time with Daddy. The J's get (need) so much attention, Ben's left to his own devices a lot of the time.
- Geeks are awesome, and you know it.
- Finally, and MOST IMPORTANT OF ALL, Ben is cute. He already has "kissy girls" chasing him at school. We saw one at the mall, and he was horrified: "Oh, no, that's one of the girls that chases me at recess!" Matt asked if she ever kissed him when she caught him, and he said, quite disgustedly (phew!) "Yes! She's one of those Kissy Girls!" These last two words were said with such utter annoyance that it was hard not to chuckle outright. Anyway, my point is, he's cute, and hopefully the mere fact that he once played D&D as a kid will keep him safe from the clutches of the worst terror I face as a mother: Some Libby Lu'd up-Texas-Cheerleader-Bratz-Princess-From-You-Know-Where. North Texas is CRAWLING with them, and I'm sincerely worried for my sons' futures.
So yeah, we're actively raising Geeks. And proud of it!
